Xiannongtan Overview

A comprehensive guide to Xiannongtan, a historical site where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties held rituals to worship the God of Agriculture and performed the plowing ceremony.

Xiannongtan, also known as the Temple of Agriculture, is a historical site where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties held rituals to worship the God of Agriculture and performed the plowing ceremony. It is one of the five imperial altar temples in Beijing.

The site was built in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty and expanded during the Qing Dynasty. It covers an area of 20 hectares and features a large altar, known as the Altar of Agriculture, which is the main site for the worship rituals. The site is also known for its beautiful scenery, with trees, lakes, and traditional pavilions.

The most famous landmark in the site is the Altar of Agriculture, a square platform made of green glazed tiles. The altar is surrounded by a circular wall, symbolizing the ancient Chinese belief that the earth is square and the sky is round. The site also includes several other buildings, such as the Hall of Worship, the Temple of the God of Agriculture, and the Imperial Vault of Heaven.
